Exmore is the largest town in Northampton County but still a small town ay heart. The eastern shore is known for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly people and beautiful landscapes that change with the passing seasons. Summer is sunshiny and warm and tourists flood the area. The cooler months are quieter but the area’s charm does not die. The gorgeous beaches and stunning homes along the shore look even prettier when the area gets a bit of snow.
Locals are committed to preserving their history. For example, Benjamin's Department Store (or Peebles Department Store) is a historic business structure built about 1910. The three-story, brick building in the Italianate style is situated at the most prominent corner within the center of the municipality. The John W. Chandler House (aka Mears House) is a historic home built in 1889-1890. The large two-story, frame Queen Anne style home features an intricate hipped-cross-gabled roof clad in slate shingles. There is also a tower with an octagonal roof and a wraparound porch with Tuscan style columns. Onancock, Chincoteague, and many others also have preserved some lovely architecture. A walking tour through any of the area’s small-town downtown areas will be an interesting way to spend a warm spring or summer day.
Local eats are also worth checking out. An Eastern Shore favorite for decades, the Exmore Diner has a reputation for fresh, local seafood, steaks, sandwiches and home-made dessert at reasonable prices. The informal atmosphere is cozy and family-friendly. The food is seasonal so that it can be as fresh as possible. The experience of the Exmore Diner is one that should not be missed by any Eastern Shore visitor looking for a taste of local cuisine. Some other delicious restaurants in the region include the Le Petit Bistro at Bloxom Vineyard and The B Hive Eatery situated on Rt. 13 in the close by township of New Church.
